Behind The Scenes of Heartstopper: Casting, Chemistry, and the Journey to Screen

Heartstopper had a bunch of brilliant people working behind the scenes, making this series true to a web comic. Later, it won the hearts of millions of fans worldwide.

Basic Overview Of Heartstopper’s Behind The Scenes

  • Alice Oseman first introduced Nick and Charlie in her debut novel Solitaire, and their story evolved into the beloved webcomic Heartstopper.
  • The casting process for Heartstopper involved over 10,000 auditions, with Kit Connor and Joe Locke’s chemistry cementing their roles as Nick and Charlie.
  • Authenticity was key in bringing Heartstopper to life, with attention to detail in the set design, costumes, and music.

The story of Heartstopper began in 2014 when Alice Oseman introduced Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring in her debut novel, Solitaire.

By 2016, Oseman decided to explore their backstory and launched Heartstopper as a webcomic. The comic’s immediate popularity led to a Kickstarter campaign in 2018, which funded the publication of Heartstopper Volume One.

Then, a year later, in 2019, with the help of Hachette Children’s Group, the first volume was finally released.

And guess what? The comic was an instant success. In fact, it sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

Then, finally, this incident inspired Netflix to adapt it into a show that premiered in April 2022.

Now we all know how sucessfull the series was in its first season. And we all can agree that it was due to Heartstopper’s perfect cast.

But did you know Daniel Edwards and the other mastermind behind the scenes of Heartstopper took over 10,000 auditions during the casting? In addition, they were taking auditions during COVID-19, and boy, it mightn’t have been easy.

During that time, they had to use self-tapes and Zoom callbacks for the audition. But even after so many complexities, their focus stayed consistent.

The only goal the Heartstopper team had was to cast teens close to the age of their characters.

Finally, Joe Locke’s audition impressed everyone with its emotional depth, but they still felt like something was missing. However, when Kit Connor and Joe did a joint reading, their chemistry melted everyone’s hearts, and finally, the roles of Charlie and Nick were finalized.

Oseman’s Involvement In Behind The Scenes Of Heartstopper

Alice Oseman, the writer of Heartstopper, also played a key role in the adaptation. As writer and executive producer, she worked closely with the team to stay true to her vision. Oseman knew sensitive scenes about mental health and coming out are going to be challenging.

So, she and Heartstopper team made young actors go through sensitivity training. Furthermore, they also sought help from LGBTQ+ organizations to get the actors into the character.

However, the characters aren’t the only thing that makes the series excellent; the set should also look real.

So, to pursue realism, the production recreated the feel of a British High School with authentic sets.

Furthermore, they made costume choices according to the characters’ personalities.

For example, Nick was seen in a sporty look, while Charlie’s look had a more artistic vibe. They did this to show their differences, and at the same time, they also showed the audience how they are connected.

The connection they had wasn’t just for the show. The brilliant cast played pranks and laughed between takes, creating a bond that enhanced their on-screen performances.

In fact, in many interviews, Joe Locke spoke about how Charlie’s journey mirrored his own. These personal connections added depth to the portrayals.

Fun bloopers and lighthearted moments kept morale high during long shooting days.

All in all, Heartstopper is more than a show. It’s a celebration of identity, love, and community—for the characters and the fans who cherish their story.
